About Us

A family-owned photo preservation studio in Washington and Oregon, and the maker of the Well Tools photo and video apps.

Who we are

The Picture Org(anizer) turns printed photos, slides, negatives, film and videotape into organized, photo-safe digital collections that families can search, share and enjoy. John Spear founded the studio in 2020, and it is still family-owned and run.

We work by appointment at our studios in Sammamish, Washington and Depoe Bay, Oregon, and by mail for clients across the country. Every item stays with us in-house from the day it arrives until it goes home.

We also make software. The Well Tools are photo and video apps for Windows, Mac and Lightroom Classic that grew out of our own studio work, and they now help photographers, scanning services and families do the same job on their own computers.

Meet the founder

Before starting The Picture Org(anizer), John spent 25 years as a program manager at Microsoft, turning ideas into shipping software and hardware. He brings that same discipline to the studio: careful systems, a clear plan for every project, and steady testing until the result is right.

It also explains why a photo studio makes software. Ideas come straight from our studio bench, John works them into features, and every feature is tested on real client projects before anyone else sees it.

“The same rigor I brought to delivering on the needs of Microsoft partners I bring to our clients’ photo and video collections. And I do the same for the software tools we ship. Nothing goes out that I am not 100% happy with.”
John Spear, Founder

The Well Tools

The Well Tools are the apps we built for our own studio work, now sold to anyone doing the same job: photographers, scanning services and families digitizing their own collections. They run on Windows and Mac and inside Adobe Lightroom Classic.

Focused

Each app focuses on one part of digitizing a collection so it can do that job really well, such as cropping scans, fixing dates, reading captions or finishing tape transfers.

Stand-alone

Every app is sold on its own, so you only buy what your collection needs. Each one has a 21-day free trial.

Complementary

The apps work well together without depending on one another, and they all run on your own computer with no account or upload.

How we care for your memories

  • Gentle handling: we capture prints and film with camera systems on a copy stand, never sheet feeders or rollers that can tear fragile originals.

  • Kept in-house: your photos and tapes are never sent to outside or overseas labs.

  • Privacy first: we are a Certified Privacy Advocate with The Photo Managers, and we keep your files on local storage with verified backups.
