Renamewell™

File & Folder Renamer

One group of names, changed in one step.

A camera calls every photo IMG_ something, and a batch of scans comes back as Scan-001. Renamewell takes off what you don't want and adds what you do, for a whole group of files or folders at once.

What Renamewell does

Renamewell does two things, together or on their own: it removes characters from the start or the end of each name, such as the IMG_ of a camera's file names, and it adds text, a prefix before each name, a suffix after it, or both. IMG_0412.jpg becomes Smith_0412.jpg.

Nothing is renamed until you have seen every new name, and every run can be undone. A file's extension always stays as it is.

It comes two ways, with one license for both: the Lightroom Classic plug-in, which renames photos and folders in your catalog and keeps everything Lightroom knows about them, and the Windows & Mac app, for files and folders that aren't in a catalog.

Features

Remove and add

Take any number of characters off the start or the end, and add a prefix, a suffix or both. Characters are removed first, then the text is added.

See every name first

The list shows every new name as you type. A name that can't be used is shown first, in red, with the reason, and that file keeps its name.

Lightroom keeps track

Photos keep their flags, stars, labels, keywords, captions, edits and collections under their new names. Sidecar .xmp files and raw + JPEG pairs are renamed with them.

Folders too

Rename folders in Lightroom's Folders panel or in the app, for example to take a batch number off a group of folders.

Files outside Lightroom

The app renames files in a folder (and the folders inside it, if you like) or files you pick, and warns you if they look like photos in a Lightroom catalog.

Undo any run

Undo this run puts the old names back straight away, and Undo a Renamewell run does the same in Lightroom.

How it works

In Lightroom Classic

  1. Select the photos and choose Library > Plug-in Extras > Rename photos.
  2. Set what to remove and what to add, and click Preview all names.
  3. Check every new name, then click Rename.

In the app

  1. Choose Files or Folders, then choose a folder or the files.
  2. Set what to remove and what to add. The list shows every new name as you type.
  3. Click Rename.

Questions

Will Lightroom lose track of renamed photos?

Not with the plug-in: it renames each photo and puts back everything the catalog knew about it. If the app renames photos that are in a Lightroom catalog, Lightroom shows them as missing, so use the plug-in for those.

Can I undo a rename?

Yes. Undo this run in the app, or Undo a Renamewell run in Lightroom, puts the old names back.

When will Renamewell be available?

Soon. It is in its final testing now. This page will have the download as soon as it is ready.

Does it work with Lightroom (the cloud version)?

No. Adobe lets plug-ins run only in Lightroom Classic. If you use the Lightroom app, use the Renamewell app on your photo folders instead.

Does it run on an Intel Mac?

Yes. An Intel Mac needs Python 3.9 or newer from python.org, plus a one-time setup the installer offers.
