To help jog your memory, start making a timeline of major events in your family. We take a lot of photos at important events like birthdays, graduations, weddings, moves, and retirements. With a timeline to refer to, you will have a better chance of figuring out the approximate date (or at least the year) most photos were taken. Start your timeline with the earliest event you are likely to have photos of. This might be the birth of a grandparent (or even a great-grandparent if you are lucky). Then list out the most recent event you took photos at. This gives you the start and endpoints for your timeline. Now start to fill in the dates you know, births, marriages, deaths, Then think about school dates: graduations, first days of elementary, middle/junior, and high school, school plays, and school sports. Religious events such as baptisms, christenings, and Bar Mitzvahs. Talk to your relatives to add in some of the dates you are not certain of. This would be a good time to ask your relatives about their photos of your family. Creating a shareable photo trove of your entire family is a gift for generations to come.
